FAQs

Is postpartum anxiety more common than postpartum depression?

Both are common and often occur together. Some research suggests anxiety may be even more prevalent, though it is diagnosed less since screening tends to focus on depression.

What does postpartum anxiety feel like physically?

A racing heart, shortness of breath, nausea, or muscle tension, alongside repetitive worried thoughts about yourself or the baby's safety. It can feel like your body is stuck in alert mode even during calm moments.

### Is checking on the baby constantly a sign of postpartum anxiety?

Occasional checking is normal. It becomes a sign of anxiety when it is frequent, hard to resist, interferes with your own sleep, or does not bring lasting relief. It can also be a sign of postpartum OCD, which often gets mistaken as anxiety alone.

### How is postpartum anxiety treated?

It typically responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy for the specific worry patterns, alongside nervous system regulation. For strong checking or compulsive features (which may be OCD), ERP or I-CBT can also help. We may use an ecletic approach to treatment to ensure your individual needs are taken addressed effectively and intentionally.

### Do you accept insurance for postpartum anxiety therapy?

We work with out of network benefits (which most PPO insurance plans have). For those without coverage, we offer sliding scale/reduced fee services as well through our graduate-student clinician program where students are trained directly in perinatal mental health.

### How soon can I be seen for postpartum anxiety?

Our goal is to get clients in within a week of reaching out, if not sooner! If we cannot see you within a week or so, we offer a warm hand off and referrals to other trusted perinatal professionals who may be a good match!

### Do you offer telehealth for postpartum anxiety?

Yes, throughout New Jersey and several other states. [LINK: /online-therapy/new-jersey]

### Can postpartum anxiety come back with a second baby even if I didn't have it the first time?

Yes. A previous pregnancy without it does not guarantee the next one will be the same. Hormones, sleep, and circumstances differ with each birth. And the good news? If you get help during pregnancy it may even reduce the possibility you experience it, or symptom severity!
